GHAZIABAD: The Uttar Pradesh transport department has ordered the immediate removal of commercial vehicles over 15 years old from the roads in the five Meerut revenue division districts of Noida, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Meerut and Baghpat.
Hailing the green move, Ghaziabad and Noida regional transport officer (RTO) Mayank Jyoti said, "This ban will apply to all commercial vehicles, whether meant for carrying people or goods.
Buses, trucks, taxis, three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles are all covered under it. The transport department will not, under any circumstances, renew the registration of commercial vehicles older than 15 years."
Earlier, the transport department used to extend the registration of 15 year old vehicles a year at a time, if it passed a 'vehicle fitness test'.
Reacting to reports of even non-commercial private cars and two-wheelers being taken off the roads, Jyoti said, "Discussions are on about this at the state level. But no decision has been taken so far."
The transport department on Saturday issued the first permit for an NCR autorickshaw to a Ghaziabad applicant, Shailesh Kumar of Jhandapur in trans-Hindon. It will become operational as soon as it is countersigned by the Delhi transport department.
