LOUISVILLE. Displacing 15.6 liters and producing up to 600 HP, the new DD16 from Detroit Diesel is the first to be offered with the company’s BlueTec SCR (selective catalytic reduction) technology. Introduced at the Mid-America Trucking Show, the new engine will be offered initially in the Western Star 4900 Series starting in March 2010 and the Western Star 6900 in July 2010. Freightliner heavy-haul models will also get the new diesel sometime in early 2010.

The DD16 fills out the new Detroit Diesel heavy-duty line, which already includes 13L and 15L models. In addition to the emissions control technology, it features an amplified common rail fuel system and turbo compounding. It will offer multi-torque power ratings from 1,750 to 2,050 lbs. ft. and 475 to 600 hp.

The largest Detroit Diesel engine is aimed at heavy-haul applications, as well as owner-operators and small fleets, according to David Siler, director of marketing. It features a wide torque curve with peak torque at 1100 RPM and an integrated engine brake.
