Dometic unveils battery-powered air conditioning system

LOUISVILLE, KY. Dometic Environmental Corp. has introduced a battery-powered auxiliary air conditioning system aimed at day cabs, announced here at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The CARB-compliant system is designed to reduce idling while a truck is waiting to load and unload at terminals.

According to the company, the 7,000-BTU unit provides two hours of cooling without running the truck engine, using a bank of Group 31 absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries as its power source.

The system includes a compressor/evaporator/blower unit that fits between the seats, as well as an external condensing unit for the back of the cab or under the truck. The two units connect through precharged refrigerant linesets for automatic charging at hook-up, Dometic said. In addition, the package includes a 2,000-watt inverter to run the air conditioner and a high-capacity alternator to recharge the batteries.
