INDIANAPOLIS. Sterling Truck Corp. launched its new Class 4-5 chassis cab — the Bullet — here yesterday at The Work Truck Show of the National Truck Equipment Assn. Chris Patterson, president & CEO of Sterling’s parent,LLC, said the mid-range truck resulted from the collaboration of Sterling and its sister DaimlerChrysler operation, Dodge, and offers “features that together represent the best of the commercial vehicle and automotive worlds.”
The Bullet is derived from the Dodge4500/5500chassis-cab, rolled out last month at the Chicago Auto Show. Along with distinctive styling elements, according to Matt Stevenson, Sterling’s director of light commercial vehicles, the Bullet is distinguished from the Ram by what comes standard and what is offered optionally.
Mike Delaney, senior vp of marketing for Freightliner LLC, pointed out that the Bullet’s development benefited from extensive brand research into what Sterling customers who operate light commercial vehicles were seeking in a mid-range work truck. He said these customers “want a reliable truck that will stay functional” and want to be able to use Sterling dealers as “one-stop shops” for both purchasing and servicing trucks. He noted the Bullet joins the low-cab-forward Class 3 Sterling 360 to round out Sterling’s mid-range lineup.
The Bullet is powered by the Cummins 7.7-liter ISB 305-hp diesel and boasts an exhaust brake, a PTO prep package, and a 34-in., 50,00-psi frame engineered for easy body upfits. The truck is offered as a Regular cab (123-in. BBC) or a Quad cab (143-in. BBC) with either 2WD or 4WD drivelines. The GVWR ranges from 16,500 to 19,500 lb. and the GCWR is 26,000 lb. A 6-sp. manual is standard and an automatic 6-sp. optional. Standard features include air conditioning and driver and passenger airbags.
The Bullet will be available at select Sterling dealers beginning in late fall of this year.
