LOUISVILLE. Western Star Trucks announced a new configuration option for its 4900 FA model series at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The OEM said the new set-forward 109-in. BBC twin steer is aimed at construction and severe-duty applications, such as West Coast mixers and “super dumps.” It features a three-degree wheel cut improvement over previous designs, to offer greater maneuverability for off-road applications.

"Not only will the new 4900 FA configuration option allow for better off-road capabilities and a tighter turning radius, the factory-installed BBC option is more cost-efficient when compared to an aftermarket conversion," said Rich Shearing, senior manager of product strategy.

The 4900 FA 109-inch twin steer is equipped with a 450 hp, 12.8L MBE 4000 diesel, Eaton Fuller 11-speed transmission, and Meritor Tandem 40,000 lb front axles and 46,000 lb rear axles. In addition, the truck features shackled springs, rather than slipper springs, for a 30% ride improvement without compromising load ratings, according to the OEM, and a roomy insulated cab as well as suspended brake and clutch petals.

Western Star also introduced a special, limited version of the 4900— the Limited Edition 67 (for the year Western Star was introduced to the North American market). This truck will be equipped with a specially built Detroit Diesel DD15 engine and will boast special commemorative trim. The OEM will manufacture just 100 of these trucks this year.

The Limited Edition 67's DD15 is rated for 560 hp and 1,967 lb-ft. of torque, called the most powerful Detroit Diesel engine available today, and was built solely for this truck. This engine gives drivers the torque response and pulling power they demand, said Shearing, “delivering 90% peak torque in 1.5 seconds, allowing the driver to get off the line fast.” He said it also allows the driver to stay in gear longer, pulling strong to 1,000 RPM, and provides best-in-class fuel economy.

"We are very excited to honor Western Star's heritage with this one-of-a-kind limited edition truck," said Shearing. "Coupled with the most powerful
DD15 engine to-date, the Limited Edition 67 will allow customers to experience the same ruggedness and durability expected of the 4900 with more power and improved performance."

The OEM also announced it has entered into an agreement with TravelCenters of America LLC to add Western Star ServicePoint-branded repair services to Petro:Lube facilities at Petro Stopping Center locations.

Under the deal, Petro:Lube locations will become Western Star ServicePoint authorized providers at a select number of locations beginning now, with complete network-wide support by summer 2009. Services available to Western Star trucks will include light repair and PM checks, as well as factory-authorized warranty service. Western Star said its customers will also benefit from coordinated service support with the Western Star authorized dealer network for full-service needs.

"Our new partnership with Petro:Lube not only makes minor maintenance more convenient for our customers, it also allows them to make just one stop for truck repairs, safety and comfort," said Jack Conlan, senior vp, service & parts for Daimler Trucks North America, Western Star’s parent firm.
