Xtra Lease to add 9,000 new trailers this year

April 21, 2015

New trailers are coming off production now for Xtra Lease, which has ordered approximately 9,000 new units for 2015.

The company is adding a mix of dry vans, liftgated vans, reefers, flatbeds and chassis. New trailers will arrive at each of the company’s 53 rental locations throughout the year, the company stated.

As with recent Xtra Lease purchases, all 53-ft. vans and reefers will receive fuel-saving aerodynamic side skirts, low-rolling resistance tires and trailer tracking units to help fleets attack utilization and costs, according to Xtra Lease.

New dry vans will include galvanized rear door frames, rear bumpers, and landing gear bracing and wing plates. Some units also will receive galvanized landing gear legs.

“While capacity remains tight, driven largely by today’s driver shortage, we’re continuing to invest in new trailers to provide fleets options for acquiring equipment,” said Bill Franz, president and CEO. “New equipment offers many advantages. Our specs include the latest technology to help save fuel, provide protection against costly damages and prevent maintenance downtime.”

Xtra Lease has invested heavily in new trailer orders in recent years, and nearly half of its fleet is no more than five years old, according to Xtra Lease. “The company has added more than 35,000 trailers equipped with aerodynamic side skirts and low rolling resistance tires since 2010, features that save fleets up to 6.5% in fuel savings, based on EPA estimates,” it added.

According to the company, the 2015 purchases include a mix of:

  • 53-, 48- and 57-ft. dry vans

  • 53-ft. reefers

  • 53-, 48- and 28-ft. liftgated vans

  • 53-ft. straight frame and single-drop flatbeds

  • 48-ft. tandem slider, spread-axle, expandable and double-drop flatbeds

  • 20/40-ft. tridem chassis
