Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes Benz vans, introduces the new Sprinter van.
Claus Tritt, general manager of commercial vehicles for Mercedes Benz, noted that the new 4-cylinder diesel engine and 7-speed automatic transmission in the new Sprinter improves fuel economy by 18% versus the previous 6-cylinder/5-speed gearbox pairing.
The new Sprinter features a redesigned front grill and headlamps.
The crew-cab version of the Sprinter is the only model that will be built in Germany and shipped to the U.S. The rest will be built in America.
Mercedes Benz is trying to broaden the appeal of the Sprinter by offering it a wider variety of configurations, such as this flatbed model.
The new Sprinter retains what Mercedes Benz called its "recognizable" two-compartment tail lights.
The new 156 hp OM651 4-cylinder diesel combined with the new 7-speed "G-Tronic Plus" transmission, as well as the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to reduce exhaust emissions.
The new Sprinter van model headed to the U.S. (far right in this picture) will go on sale Sept. 1.
A lineup of previous Sprinter models at the event highlighted the vehicle's history from 1962 through 2002.
Mercedes Benz also brought two of European van models to the Sprinter rollout -- the Vito (on the right) and Citan.
Mercedes-Benz rolled out the new 2014 model year Sprinter van at a special press event held in Dusseldorf, Germany.
