Pilot Flying J acquires Western Petroleum

Feb. 23, 2012

Pilot Flying J has acquired fuel and lubricants hauler Western Petroleum. Terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 1952, Vernal, UT-based Western Petroleum transports and delivers fuels, lubes, and industrial oils to hydrocarbon drilling and fracturing companies, construction companies, mining companies, and farms in the Rocky Mountains, the Northern Plains, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Pennsylvania.

It has more than 500 employees.

“The acquisition of Western Petroleum’s operations and employing Western Petroleum’s talented workforce is a significant complement to an important aspect of our growth strategy.  Western Petroleum’s exceptional service mentality has earned a place as a key vendor to some major petroleum and natural gas drilling companies.  The company has positioned itself for growth in many of the key geographic regions where hydraulic fracturing and hydrocarbon drilling activities are escalating.  Pilot Flying J recognizes the energy services channel as a way to diversify its business while participating in a growth industry,” said Pilot Flying J president & CEO Jimmy Haslam. “Pilot Flying J’s core operational competencies should be an immediate enhancement to Western Petroleum’s growth strategy and financial performance.”

Western Petroleum will operate as a division of Pilot Flying J and continue to be led by the same leadership with Perry Taylor as president & CEO, Samuel Taylor as chief sales & marketing officer, and Janis Kline as chief financial officer.

“We are extremely excited to become a part of the Pilot Flying J team,” said Perry Taylor. “They have an excellent reputation in the travel plaza and travel center business.  Their expertise in petroleum transportation and fuel acquisition will allow Western Petroleum to increase its ability to service its existing customers, and quickly and efficiently enter new markets.”
