TCA still looking for Wreaths Across America volunteers

Oct. 25, 2012

The Truckload Carriers Assn. said a call for volunteers to deliver wreaths to veteran’s cemeteries as part of the Wreaths Across America program resulted in only two out of 385 for-hire carrier and private fleet members signing up. The trucking association is asking that those interested in honoring veterans immediately fill out a form to volunteer.

“The scope of this year’s operation is the biggest yet, so it is critical that TCA know as soon as possible what resources are available,” TCA said in an announcement.

TCA said it is crucial that everyone interested in volunteering fill out the association’s form, “even if they have already contacted Wreaths Across America or Past Chairman Barry Pottle about participating.”

A new tool connected to the TCA signup form collects all of the information needed to coordinate fleet involvement.

The Wreaths Across America mission — “Remember, Honor, Teach” — is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies a specified Saturday in December at Arlington, as well as veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. This year’s ceremony will take place Saturday, Dec. 15.

The group needs trucker volunteers to help haul wreaths to various locations. The program also includes a week of events including international veteran’s tributes, ceremonies at State Houses and a week-long “Veteran’s Parade” between Maine and Virginia. The organization uses the events spread the message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.

“This week of events is made possible by thousands of volunteers who organize local ceremonies, raise funds to sponsor wreaths, and participate in the events,” organizers emphasize. “We receive no government funding. The cost of our programs is paid by individual wreaths sponsors, corporate donors and volunteer truckers.”

The organization also coordinates veteran services and recognition through a variety of programs, and provides schools with teaching aides for projects throughout the year.
