Garmin will utilize Navteq Traffic’s RDS delivery service and interactive advertising service for the Nuvi 755T, 765T, 775T and 2x5 GPS systems to power its traffic alerts service, Navteq announced.
The traffic system delivers data via FM radio, alerting drivers of accidents, road closures and construction. According to Navteq, there will be no subscription fee required for the service since it will allow advertising over its RDS network, which the company said the would be “contextually relevant”—for instance, restaurant ads while a user is looking for a place to eat dinner.
"By providing customers like Garmin an advertising-based revenue model in conjunction with RDS traffic data delivery, we believe that more drivers will have access to the most up-to-date traffic information to better manage their daily commutes," said John MacLeod, executive vp for Navteq. "Drivers benefit by receiving free traffic while offering advertisers a new location-targeted environment to engage consumers."
