The asset-tracking provider Navman Wireless Business Solutions has added messaging and in-vehicle navigation to its services with the introduction of a new mobile data terminal specifically designed to withstand commercial vehicle environments.
The optional add-on device, the MTD 860, allows fleets to send real-time text messages to drivers, who can choose from up to 100 pre-programmed replies. Drivers can also use the telephone-style keyboard to fill in forms or create free-text message replies. Fleets can also choose to run optional real-time in-vehicle navigation services on the new device.
The system uses both the Verizon and Cingular wireless data networks for communications, providing coverage throughout the U.S. Back office functions are handled by Navman’s Windows-based OnlineAVL software. The application allows fleet managers to create and send messages to individual drivers, as well as provides vehicle location and tracking. It can also be used to create a variety of reports analyzing vehicle and driver activities.
Pricing for the Navman system uses a per-vehicle fixed daily rate. Tracking only starts at $1.50 per vehicle per day, tracking and messaging starts at $1.77 per day, and adding in-vehicle navigation brings the daily cost to $2.10 per vehicle.
