Under a new partnership agreement, Symbol Technologies will begin building handheld devices that incorporate Nextel Communications' iDEN wireless technology. The partnership will add digital cellular voice, Nationwide Direct Connect push-to-talk service, Nextel Online wireless data, GPS positioning and two-way messaging to rugged, portable Symbol devices commonly used in field and logistics services.
In particular, the “walkie-talkie” ability and integrated GPS location will be unique to the Symbol/Nextel hybrid devices, according to Henry Popplewell, vp for Nextel's transportation, distribution and retail industries.
