Qualcomm Inc. will install 4,000 untethered trailer tracking units in Atlas Van Line trailers by the end of 2005, according to the wireless services company. Atlas, along with Swift Transportation, Werner Enterprises and the Celadon Group, formed an industry consortium last year to help Qualcomm develop its new trailer system.

The fleet says the untethered system will help it improve security and operational productivity. It also plans to use the system to allow customers to track household goods moves over the Web in real-time.
