Tax tip: IRS has begun audits of more than 50,000 taxpayers, trying to identify where more enforcement resources should be devoted. Although not as intrusive as the “audits from hell” conducted in the '80s, these will be more intensive than typical audits. Agency is also stepping up efforts against fraudulent offshore tax-avoidance schemes.
