Paying closer attention to specs will help fleets save fuel

Large common carriers are extremely sophisticated when it comes to protecting profits. Since fuel is their number one truck operating expense, fleets work to minimize its use by closely controlling vehicle specs and applications. However, that attention doesn't always carry over to the pickups and vans that haul no freight, but instead fulfill a diverse range of utility and maintenance shop support roles.

Nonetheless, the fact remains that Class 2 vehicles are relatively big users of fuel. To address this issue, The Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Assns. sponsored a technical session at its fall meeting enumerating basic strategies that fleets should follow to decrease light-duty fuel bills

* Track the gasoline used for powering light-duties, just as you would the diesel fuel in bigger trucks. Otherwise, operators can't improve on current performance levels.

* Encourage use of conservative driving habits (defined as reasonable acceleration and braking), which result in a fuel savings of at least 20% on light-duty vehicles.

* Select the appropriate powerplants. Base Class 2 engines may be inadequate for the demands of commercial service. Determine in advance what the duty cycle will be; then select the engine that provides adequate power at cruise speeds while operating in an economical rpm band -- even if it means a slight decrease in maximum payload

* Take a closer look at powertrain options. Trucks equipped with manual overdrives or automatic transmissions with lockup torque converters can save fuel

In this special section, we present specs for every make and model of light-duty truck for 1998. The only entirely new model for the '98 model-year is Dodge's Quad Cab. Ford's new Super Duty F-250 and F-350s are included, although they won't be available until March and will be introduced as 1999 models. (See New Product Headliners, this issue.)
