Webb Wheel Products announced a new brake drum for its Platinum Series product line at the Mid-America Trucking Show. According to the company, the Platinum brake drum was developed using a new material on which a patent is pending.

Webb said the drum delivers extended life by providing low wear, resistance to heat-checking and exceptional strength. The result, said the company, is a lightweight brake drum that exceeds the performance of all standard drums.

Webb specifically stated the Platinum drum has friction characteristics similar to those of a full cast-iron brake drum. What's more, no special linings or AL factors are required. The Platinum drum also boasts the same mounting-flange thickness as a steel-shelled drum. However, the Platinum drum weighs 88 lb., while a full-cast drum weighs 110 lb. and a steel-shelled drum, 94 lb.

The Platinum drum is now available for all popular truck and trailer axles with additional applications scheduled to follow.
