The Goodyear G395 LHS steer tire for long-haul applications is a completely new design offering uniform wear, more miles on the original tread and better retreadability, according to the company, which is backing the new tire's casing with a 7-yr./700,000-mi. limited warranty without retreading restrictions.

Unveiled late last month, the high-tech G395 LHS features an “evolving” 5-rib tread design that maintains an optimum footprint for improved tread wear. It also introduces what Goodyear calls “a tire within a tire” design that retains maximum traction and handling characteristics throughout the various stages of tread wear.

To help reduce irregular wear and cupping, the G395 gets a new pressure distribution groove on the outer edge of the shoulder rib, while lateral sipes and slots as well as angled walls on the tire's three main ribs provide excellent traction and handling while extending the tire's original life in the steer-axle position, according to Goodyear.

In addition to providing uniform wear, advanced tread compound maintains cooler tire running temperatures, increasing casing life, the company says. The G395 LHS casing itself features a puncture-resistant, 4-belt package with high-tensile steel on the lower three belts and a polyamide top belt to protect against moisture damage.

The new tire is manufactured at Goodyear's Danville, VA, plant with a computer-controlled process that insures uniformity and includes a final X-ray inspection.
