Background-check extension

Drivers from Canada and Mexico transporting hazardous materials into the U.S. will not have to undergo background checks until August 10, 2006.

Part of last year's highway bill, the background check requirement was originally set to go into effect February 10, 2006. The Transportation Security Administration published a notice of the extension in the Federal Register on that day.

However, the agency has the authority to set an earlier date for implementing the background checks by issuing another notice.
