LOUISVILLE. Eaton Corp. announced the approval of its new UltraShift Plus automated mechanical transmissions (AMT)as data book options for select models of Class 8 Freightliner Cascadia and Volvo VN heavy-duty power units here last week at the Mid-America Trucking Show.

On the Cascadia, the UltraShift Plus is available on the 125-in BBC model powered by the Detroit Diesel DD13, DD15 or DD16 engine. It is also offered on the Cascadia 113-in BBC version equipped with the DD 13.

At Volvo Trucks North America, the AMT is available on all heavy-duty linehaul vehicles powered by a Cummins diesel engine.

The truckmakers’ databooks had included earlier automated transmission offerings from Eaton, as well as Eaton Fuller manual transmissions.

These latest options are specific to Eaton’s UltraShift Plus Linehaul Active Shifting (LAS), Multipurpose High Performance (MHP) and Multipurpose Extreme Performance (MXP) models.

Each is available in 10-, 13- and 18-speed versions and provide up to 2,250 lbs/ft of torque capacity. Unlimited GCW is available with the 18-speed platform.

All of Eaton’s UltraShift Plus transmissions, which are available in overdrive or direct drive, feature a new self-adjusting electronic clutch actuator designed for fast, smooth engagement, the company noted. And Eaton said intelligent shift selection software employs grade sensing, weight computation and driver throttle commands to make automated shift decisions.
