The Bulgarian MEP from the EP ALDE group, Metin Kazak, has asked the European Commission to intervene in the issue with Turkey imposing restrictions on Bulgarian freight road carriers.

Kazak, who was elected on the ticket of the ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, says he was expecting a constructive answer not only on this issue, but on the entire spectrum of problems between Turkey and the European Union regarding Customs regulations.

He has informed the EC that recently problems between Bulgaria and Turkey have deepened over restrictions imposed on Bulgarian truck companies and drivers.

It emerged, just two days ago, that restrictive measures against Bulgarian freight road carriers will not only be restored effective June 1, but even upped, as this is the position of the Turkish haulers association UND.

Bulgarian drivers and truck owners are outraged by the hurdles for their business on the other side of the border and by unfair competition. They complain from unfounded restrictions such as not allowing into Turkish territory trucks carrying over 500 liters of fuel or making drivers wait at the Turkish border for days.

EC must answer within a 3-week deadline.
