Con-way expands driver wellness program

Con-way Freight is expanding its employee wellness program after positive initial results and feedback, the company said. The company plans to make the program available to a total of 6,400 employees in 21 states by the end of 2008. The program, which is provided in collaboration with Wellness Coaches USA, was launched as a pilot program early in 2007.

The carrier will also launch a 10-week weight loss competition throughout its network of service locations, awarding clothing store gift certificates to the top three winners in each region around the U.S.

"We've seen lifelong smokers quitting smoking, employees lowering chronic high blood pressure, overweight employees shedding pounds and still others discovering and being treated for life-threatening conditions,” said Bob Petrancosta, vp of safety for Con-way Freight. "You can't put a price tag on successes like that.”

According to Con-way, as a result of the program workplace injuries and workers compensation costs decreased 80% and lost work days were cut by 75% at pilot locations. The company said that 831 employees have lost a combined 6,269 lbs. while 170 quit smoking and 669 reduced their blood pressure.
