Aether Systems Inc. has announced that Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. has completed a successful trial of Aether wireless service and has begun a rollout to its fleet of 1,700 trucks.

The wireless application will allow the carrier to monitor and improve upon almost every cycle in its P&D system, Aether said. It incorporates components of Aether's technology for mobile data synchronization and optimum performance of data delivery over wireless networks.

The application runs on a Symbol 7500 handheld with embedded WinCE operation system, while Aether provides wireless connectivity and support.

"We are very excited to roll out this empowering new wireless application to our entire fleet," said Terry Hutchins, vp of field services at Old Dominion. "We believe the system will continue to support our efforts to provide solutions through technology to our client base."
