The Intouch G2X Fleet Management System from PeopleNet Communications Corp. can now be used with handheld devices running the Palm OS. Announced today at the National Private Truck Council Annual Convention in Nashville, TN, the newest Intouch feature uses a vehicle cradle to wirelessly transmit any data captured by a Palm III, TRP Pro, Symbol 1500/1700 or other handheld device using that operating system.

Taking the place of the G2X message display unit, the handheld provides access to all of the system’s features, including two-way messaging, Internet e-mail, and address books, as well as Palm applications such as calendars and calculators. The Palm devices can also be updated remotely using PeopleNet’s over-the-air-programming (OTAP) feature.

Future applications for the Palm OS version of Intouch include signature capture, electronic driver logs, bar code reading and printing, document exchange and imaging, Web-based content delivery, in-vehicle mapping and navigation, and printing, according to the company.

For fleets that currently have their own Palm OS handheld devices, the Intouch software can be remotely installed with OTAP, or fleets can purchase new Palm IIIs from PeopleNet. The new system will be commercially available June 15, according to the company.
