The U.S. went on full alert against terrorist attacks with National Guard troops in full battle fatigues guarding San Francisco's famed Golden Gate Bridge and other California spans, several news agencies reported today.

According to California Governor Gray Davis, three separate federal agencies, including the FBI, have indicated there was a potential terrorist attack against West Coast suspension bridges, most notably the Golden Gate Bridge, during rush hour today.

Federal Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge said the state of alert, prompted by a warning on Monday that new attacks on U.S. targets might be imminent, remains in force.

In addition to California, the alert was sent to law enforcement agencies in Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Montana and Idaho on Wednesday.
