The company's first-quarter net loss was $454,000 compared with a 2002 first quarter net loss of $19.5 million.

"Our commitment to improve asset utilization continues to pay off as demonstrated by reduced deadhead and increased miles per tractor," said president & CEO Michael Paxton.

During the first quarter, Transport America's deadhead miles decreased to 10%, and miles per tractor increased 3.1%. Revenue per tractor per week improved 3.6%.
