Western Star Trucks announced today it will offer Mercedes-Benz MBE4000 engines for its 4900 FA and 4900 SA truck models. Production will begin in January.

The OEM said the 12.8-liter, in-line six-cylinder MBE4000 engine is ideal for vocational applications. The MBE4000 engine is rated from 350 to 450 horsepower with peak torque of 1,550 lb. ft. at 1,100 rpm.

The MBE4000 is exempt from the new EPA emissions standards and does not require any engine modifications or after treatment devices under current rules, according to Western Star.

The MBE4000 is manufactured by DaimlerChrysler Powersystems. The full Western Star dealer network as well as the Detroit Diesel service network supports it.

Western Star, a subsidiary of Freightliner LLC, also announced that heavy-duty truck production has been shifted to its Portland, OR-plant.
