The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) on Tuesday issued a request for information [FMCSA-2005-22097] to invite comments, suggestions and ideas on new operational concepts to develop more performance-based commercial vehicle safety inspections.

Specifically, the agency noted advanced sensor and on-board diagnostics as well as wireless communications as potential avenues. This request is consistent with FMCSA’s Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 initiative, which reviews how the agency could most effectively manage programs that improve motor carrier safety.

Comments are due by Oct. 17 and may be submitted via dms.dot.gov.
