The number of large truck fatalities in 2005 totaled 5,212, over about 22.3-billion miles traveled, according to preliminary data released by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration yesterday. This means the fatality rate for ’05 was lower than that for 2004, when there more fatalities (5,235) and fewer vehicle miles traveled (22.1-billion).

The fatality rate for large trucks and buses combined per 100-million total vehicle miles traveled, which includes miles driven by autos, trucks and buses, was 0.184 in 2005, according to preliminary estimates, down from the ’04 rate of 0.186.
