Sterling adds safety options

ORLANDO. Air disc brakes, collision warning and roll stability control (RSC) will be offered as new factory-installed options by Sterling Trucks, according to a company announcement here at the annual meeting of the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC). The safety options will be available on the company’s set-back axle models of the A-Line, and all L-Line and Acterra models.

The air disc brakes are proprietary models from Sterling’s parent Daimler Trucks and will be offered for both front and rear axles, an industry first, according to Sterling. Orders will be accepted beginning in March, with production set for June.

Although Daimler Trucks has been installing the Eaton-Vorad Collision Warning System in its North American trucks since 1995, Sterling will now offer the new VS-400 system, which includes smart cruise control, new compact sensors and a simplified driver interface with an LED display. Sterling says it will begin taking orders for the new collision warning system in the fourth quarter.

The RSC option is from Meritor Wabco. It is an active stability system that controls engine torque and braking, as well as drive axle and trailer brakes to reduce rollovers and jackknifing. It is available for order now.
