Big rig, nearly 20 cars crash on LA freeway

At least one semi and nearly 20 cars collided on a freeway in Agua Dulce, CA, in the mountains north of Los Angeles, leaving at least 17 people injured, including two critically, according to a report in The Republic.

Los Angeles County fire Capt. Mark Savage said the vehicles, including one or two big rigs, tangled early Tuesday morning on the southbound side of State Route 14 — known locally as the Antelope Valley Freeway —  midway between the high desert Antelope Valley and the Los Angeles Basin. The highway travels through the San Gabriel Mountains that rises to a summit elevation topping 3,200 ft.

Television news footage showed more than a half-dozen cars, pickup trucks and SUVs crumpled together and piled on top of each other in a cluster of wreckage.

The crash was reported at 9:45 a.m. and resulted in the closure of all the southbound lanes and two northbound lanes of the freeway. The road was completely reopened at 2:08 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

A fleet of ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals, Savage said. Fire Capt. Doug LaCount told KABC-TV that most of the injuries were minor.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

It's crazy, I can't imagine being involved in an accident like that. And I worried these days that my radiator is gone... It's a good thing that nobody diet, that's always a relief.

I have seen this accident in the news, and from the looks of it, it was a very fatal accident. Freeways are always prone to such and I recall seeing one accident happen in front of my eyes. It was on the opposite lane that I was driving and it was not in the same magnitude as the one here, but it involved a few cars and a couple of semi-trailer trucks. One car was badly hit, but the rest of the cars only spun a few meters away. That is why, a word caution for all motorists out there – when driving on the freeway, always keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. It is worth doing it for the trip rather than suffer a lifetime.

It was indeed a tragic incident. The accident had resulted in over 17 people getting serious injuries and about two people who were hurt fatally. The cars got all cramped up on a little space which resulted in such a catastrophic incident. The sad fact here is that it wouldn't be the fault of each and every individual present there but the fault of one single careless individual which led to such an unfortunate event.

The rate of accidents is increasing and a lot of people are loosing their lives in such mishaps. In spite of huge awareness programs by government car crashes are happening. There is need of stricter implementation of traffic rules and people must control their speed limits.
