Shell to install vehicle chargers at 33 Penske locations in 6 states

The Level 2 EV chargers will support Penske Truck Leasing’s growing fleet of Ford E-Transits and other light-duty commercial vehicles. Shell Recharge Solutions hopes to have its chargers at nearly 100 locations by year’s end.

LONG BEACH, California—Penske Truck Leasing and Shell Recharge Solutions North America launched a joint venture to create more light-duty electric vehicle charging at Penske locations in six states, the two companies announced here at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo.

The project will install Level 2 electric truck charging stations with plug-and-charge capabilities for Penske’s growing battery-electric truck fleet in California. Later this year, L2 chargers will be installed at Penske sites in Washington, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. The companies expect to expand installations to more locations in 2023. Penske is No. 17 on the 2022 FleetOwner 500: For Hire.

“Not only is Shell providing us the infrastructure support—but also the critical network monitoring and maintenance to ensure that these chargers remain up and we can keep these vehicles running and on the road,” Drew Cullen, SVP of fuels and facilities services at Penske Transportation Services, said during a May 9 ACT Expo 2022 media session at the Long Beach Convention Center.

To support Penske and its light-duty commercial fleet of Ford E-Transits, Shell Recharge Solutions will deliver design, installation, and charging network support through its SKY software platform. Shell Recharge Solutions also will provide maintenance support across Penske’s network of L2 electric truck charging stations.

Shell has its L2 chargers in more than 30 locations but expects that number to be near 100 by year’s end, according to Daniel Silva, Shell VP of enterprise accounts, sectors, and decarbonization.

He added it was great that some of the new locations are beyond the regulation-heavy West Coast. “That shows how we’re trying to go further—not only where you have policies in place, but where you actually can lead the way to the energy transformation.”

Shell, which has announced its goals to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050, wants to have more than 500,000 charging stations around the world. “Partnerships like Penske, help us to get there,” Silva said.

Shell chargers will be installed at 33 Penske Truck Leasing sites: 23 in California; three in Washington state; two each in Colorado, Illinois, and Oregon; and one in Reading, Pennsylvania, home to Penske’s corporate headquarters. This will bring the Penske Shell L2 network to a total of 79 chargers.
