The state of Illinois has awarded Navistar’s Melrose Park engine plant with its Governor’s Sustainability Award for the 14th time.

The award is presented for efforts to safeguard the environment and promote sustainability initiatives within the state. Since 2007, the Melrose plant has reduced the energy it uses by 14 million kilowatt hours and cut 20 million gals. of water use this year alone.

“Navistar’s accomplishments in the Melrose Park engine plant are part of our broader initiative to protect the environment through sustainable business practices across our global operations,” said Melrose Park engine plant manager Ron Poland. “As part of this comprehensive approach, we are looking at how we manufacture our products, manage our facilities, and engage employees and other stakeholders in environmental efforts.”

The plant is ISO 14001 certified for its environmental initiatives, which include reducing energy, water and natural gas usage.
