Fuel prices on the rise

Average retail pump prices in the U.S. for diesel and gasoline have continued to climb across the board this week, according to data tracked by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The national average for diesel rose just over 3 cents to $2.811 per gallon this week, the agency noted. The national average is $1.164 per gallon cheaper compared to the same week in 2014.

Diesel prices increased in every region of the country, with the West Coast and California seeing the greatest increases according to EIA. Four areas saw prices above the $3-per-gallon mark:

  • New England at $3.057 per gallon, up nearly 1 cent from last week;

  • The Central Atlantic at $3.110, up nearly 3 cents from last week;

  • California at $3.156, up over 5 cents from last week’s $3.102.

  • West Coast at $3.026 per gallon, a 6 cent increase from last week’s $2.965.

The national average for gasoline increased nearly 9 cents to $2.570 per gallon this week, the agency noted, which is $1.143 per gallon cheaper compared to the same week in 2014.

Similar to diesel prices, gasoline prices saw regional increases across the board. The most dramatic regional increase was just over 21 cents on the West Coast – $3.182 this week compared to last week’s $2.968.
