NFI, Prologis Mobility launch new electric charging depot in California

April 29, 2025
Up to 20 trucks can be powered per day by the facility's 10 charging ports.

NFI and Prologis Mobility have opened an electric truck charging depot in Ontario, California, to support NFI’s nearly 90-strong electric fleet. NFI, whose trucks handle drayage from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the Inland Empire, has one of the largest Class 8 electric truck fleets in the nation.

“As one of the first logistics companies to deploy electric Class 8 trucks at scale, we recognize that charging access is one of the biggest barriers to adoption,” Brian Webb, president of Port Services at NFI, said. “Through our partnership with Prologis Mobility, we now have an infrastructure solution that keeps our fleet moving, optimizes uptime, and allows us to integrate electric vehicles into our operations efficiently.”

The 1 MW facility is equipped with 10 charging ports that can charge 20 trucks a day. It’s also configured for Volvo VNR Electric and Freightliner eCascadia trucks, as NFI uses both in its fleet. The trucks typically run two port pickups per day, per truck, averaging 220 miles driven between charges.

The depot is the latest move by NFI to streamline and support its electric operations. Earlier this year, the company opened a “first-of-its-kind” 7-MW charging depot and maintenance site near its existing warehouse in Ontario. The facility includes 38 350 kW high-speed chargers that can handle two trucks simultaneously.

For Prologis, which provides EV charging infrastructure for such applications, the site is just the latest addition to a growing network of charging hubs and depots that stretch from coast to coast. Last April, the company, alongside Maersk-affiliated Performance Team, completed the largest heavy-duty truck charging hub to be powered by a self-sufficient microgrid. Earlier this year, Prologis also announced it had provided 10 million miles worth of charging since its founding in 2022.

“Fleet operators like NFI are making strategic investments in electrification, and accessing reliable charging is critical,” Henrik Holland, global head of Prologis Mobility, said. “We’re focused on delivering the right infrastructure in the right locations, ensuring our customers have access to charging that supports their operations today and in the future.”

Prologis’ focus on “the right infrastructure” now includes a prefabricated charging platform. Designed for quick, sometimes non-permanent deployments, the platform is capable of providing up to 1,200 kW of charging across eight ports and includes dispensers, power cabinets, and smart technology.

For fleets trying out electrification as a whole, or just trying out new routes, the platform can be appealing  because of its non-fixed nature. With additional options such as linear generators and batteries, operators can get ahead of the often weeks- or months-long utility interconnection timelines.

“Our customers need EV infrastructure that’s as dynamic as their operations,” Henrik Holland, Global Head of Prologis Mobility, said. “With this platform, they can deploy quickly, adjust for seasonal demand, and scale without being tied to grid or construction constraints.”

Prologis Mobility will deploy the platform at its upcoming Vernon, California, public charging hub, scheduled to open this summer.
