Recall roundup: Safety notices issued for trucks, vans, and semis

Dec. 12, 2023
The NHTSA’s latest safety notices feature deactivated software, flickering lights, insufficiently bonded windows, incorrect labels, malfunctioning high beams, and turn signals on certain commercial vehicles operating in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued new recall notices for commercial vehicles, heavy-duty pickup trucks, and heavy-duty vans.

Owners of the affected vehicles should be contacted via U.S. mail over the next two months, but fleet and independent owners of these vehicles can reach the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. More information on each recall can be found below.

Some F-150 Lightning models may have deactivated ESC

Ford is recalling certain 2022 and 2023 F-150 Lightning vehicles. The SYNC software may fail to activate the electronic stability control system at the beginning of each ignition cycle. Failure to reset the ESC to active may result in the driver unknowingly operating the vehicle without electronic stability control, increasing the crash risk. This recall potentially affects 5,118 vehicles.

The accessory protocol interface module software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air update. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23C38.

Some F-150 models may experience flickering parking lights

Ford is also recalling certain 2022 F-150 vehicles. The parking lights may flicker when the headlights are activated. Flickering parking lights can reduce visibility, increasing the risk of a crash. This recall potentially affects 18,527 vehicles.

Dealers will update the LED driver module software. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23C36. Vehicles with high-series headlamps previously recalled under recall number 22V-686 that received an incomplete remedy or have not yet been repaired will need to have the new remedy completed.

Sprinter and Freightliner vans may have insufficiently bonded windows

Daimler Vans USA is recalling certain 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and 2021 Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The topcoat paint formula may cause the windows and interior lashing rails to be insufficiently bonded to the vehicle. An insufficiently bonded window can detach during a crash, and objects secured to an insufficiently bonded interior lashing rail can detach, increasing the risk of injury. This recall potentially affects 131 vehicles.

Dealers will inspect the paint adhesion and repair as necessary. Depending on the extent of any damage, DVUSA may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3LACKHA.

Some Volvo Trucks’ models GAWR listed incorrectly on label

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain 2024 VN and VHD vehicles equipped with size 295/75 or 385/65 Continental tires on the front axle. The gross axle weight rating listed on the vehicle certification label is incorrect, which can cause the vehicle to be overloaded. An overloaded vehicle can increase the risk of a crash. This recall potentially affects 53 vehicles.

Dealers will remove and replace the label. Owners may contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 800-528-6586. Volvo Truck's number for this recall is RVXX2314.

Some Ram models' high beams and turn signals malfunctioning

Chrysler (Stellantis) is recalling certain 2023 Ram 1500 Classic, Ram 3500 Classic, 3500 Cab Chassis, 2023-2024 Ram 2500, 4500/5500 Cab Chassis, and Ram 3500 vehicles. The steering column control module may cause the high beams to activate when the turn signal is used or activate the turn signal when the high beams are used. In addition, the turn signal self-canceling feature may not function properly. Turn signals and/or high beams that do not work as intended may cause confusion or reduced visibility to other road users, increasing the risk of a crash. This recall potentially affects 142,150 vehicles.

Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering column control module. Owners may contact FCA US customer service at 800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is B2A.
