ORLANDO. Meritor Wabco is rolling out a version of its roll stability support (RSS) system that can be easily retrofitted to older model trailers.

Unveiled at a special ride-and-drive event here at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s annual meeting, the RSS retrofit package is designed specifically for trailers in the North American market equipped with either spring or air ride suspensions, said Mark Melletat, manager of marketing and customer support for Meritor Wabco.

“It’ll cost a little more to install if the trailer isn’t equipped with ABS [anti lock braking system] since RSS taps into the ABS systems,” Melletat said. “We believe this is a great fit for specialty trailers, such as tankers and flatbeds, because they typically have a high center of gravity.”

Of the roughly 3.5-million trailers on the road in the U.S. and Canada, about 12% are refrigerated, 10% are flatbed and 3% are tankers, with the rest dry vans, Melletat said, meaning some 875,000 units out of the total trailer population are a prime fit for Meritor Wabco’s RSS retrofit product.
