Cummins announced its new ISX12 heavy-duty engine with optimized calibrations can deliver up to a 12% improvement in fuel economy over the ISX11.9 engine in some applications.

Cummins said the engine delivers as much as 12% improvement in vocational applications and up to 5% when used in regional applications.

“Cummins is excited about the opportunity to offer customers this evolution of our 12L product,” said Jeff Jones, vice president - sales and market communications. “Through continuous product improvements, we are able to introduce the new ISX12 to better meet the demands of our customers and to provide value that only Cummins products can bring to their operations.”

The ISX12 is designed to work in rigorous duty cycles, including dump and mixer trucks, and refuse applications, Cummins said. It delivers improved pulling power and strong clutch engagement torque. A full range of standard horsepower from 310 to 425 hp. and SmartTorque ratings of 330 to 425 hp. are offered. SmartTorque ratings unleash higher torque in the two top gears so that drivers can climb steep hills with fewer downshifts.

Clutch engagement torque is 800 lbs.-ft. and the engine comes with eight vocational and five refuse ratings are available, along with integrated rear engine power take-off (REPTO), front engine power take-off (FEPTO) and a choice of hydraulic drive options.

Full production of the engine begins in March.

The ISX12 utilizes common components with the Cummins ISX15 big-bore engine, including an enhanced cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, a single VGT turbocharger and the proprietary XPI fuel system. It comes with the Cummins aftertreatment system with selective catalytic reduction technology.

In addition to vocational applications, the ISX12 is suited for regional hauling and LTL distribution operations running Class 8 daycabs, Cummins said.
