Re-refined oil gets Detroit engine approval

Feb. 12, 2013

The recycled and re-refined EcoPower 10W-30 CJ-4/SM diesel engine oil developed by Safety-Kleen Systems recently gained approval for use in diesel engines built by Detroit, a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA).

Curt Knapp, executive VP-marketing and oil re-refining Sales for Safety-Kleen, said the approval includes Series 50, Series 60, MBE 4000, MBE 900 and HDEP engines equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems and diesel particle filters (DPF) as specified in 93K218.

Knapp added that EcoPower’s 10W-30 CJ-4/SM oil is also been approved by or meets the requirements of Cummins, Caterpillar, Mack, Mercedes-Benz, Navistar and Volvo.

Rodney Walker, technical director for Safety-Kleen, added that the 10W-30 CJ-4/SM EcoPower blend can boost fuel economy by as much as 1.5% compared to using EcoPower’s 15W-40 CJ-4/SM formulation.

“That means a fleet using 8 million gallons of diesel fuel at $4 per gallon could save up to $480,000,” he stressed. “EcoPower 10W-30 CJ-4/SM is also formulated for better cold-temperature starts and provides excellent varnish, sludge and carbon deposit control.”

Knapp added that Safety-Kleen’s recycling and re-refining process makes engine oil a sustainable resource, pointing out that it takes 42 gallons of crude oil to make the same amount of high-quality engine oil you get from recycling 1 gallon of used engine oil.

“It also requires up to 85% less energy to produce than oil made from virgin crude [meaning] a fleet that uses 250,000 gallons of EcoPower per year could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1,900 metric tons per year,” he noted. “That’s equal to growing over 49,000 trees for 10 years in an urban environment.”
