Navistar shows remote diagnostics system

Oct. 21, 2013

ORLANDO, FL. Navistar has developed a remote diagnostics system that it says will integrate with most existing fleet telematics systems and be capable of monitoring all vehicle makes, not just the company’s International brand trucks. Demonstrated publically for the first time at ATA’s annual management meeting, OnCommand Connection is currently undergoing fleet tests and is set to officially launch in January, according to Nadine Haupt, dir. of powertrain product marketing.

Based on open architecture, OnCommand Connection provides fleet managers with a single web-based portal that will transmit fault codes and diagnostic information from vehicles in real-time. A “fault code action plan” will detail the truck’s problem in simple, non-jargon terms for the fleet’s maintenance operation, and dealer shop locations – both Navistar and other makes – near the vehicle will be displayed on a map, Haupt said. The new remote diagnostics will also connect users with Navistar’s technical support and a dedicated OnCommand “repair advocate.”

Although not available at launch in January, Navistar said it expects in the near future to add relevant parts availability information for the dealers nearest a vehicle diagnosed as needing immediate attention.

The company said it is currently testing its open-platform remote diagnotics system with the major fleet telematics providers, including OmniTracs, PeopleNet, Teletrac, Vnomics, XRS, Geotab, Cyntrx and Pedigree Technologies.

No pricing for the service was available at the ATA demonstration.
