Utilizing the data consolidated for Truck Blue Book back through 2013 has shown large volume increases on heavy-duty commercial trucks during the month of June compared to May consistently over the years.
Within the past three years, June has been a strong month for used truck sales with price stability and market activity increases. Despite volume being down for the market as a whole this year, the most popular subtypes and brands still stayed within this seasonal trending.
For example, Kenworth had a large year-over-year market share hit, while Peterbilt grew in popularity. Kenworth’s market share took quite a hit in June 2016 after dominating the market last June; yet neither prices nor quality of these trucks suffered given their drop in average utilization and steady pricing. A few of the lighter duty trucks such as GMC and Chevrolet dropped in the past, but have been gradually taking back market share so far in 2016.
International FMV dropped in June, but their market share grew significantly. International has shown great market presence during June over the last 4 years; however their 28.6% in 2016 was by far their highest market share percentage yet. Sleeper tractors throughout the market showed one of the only FMV decreases from both May 2016 and June 2015, so the large increase in market activity was expected. With volume up, prices remaining stable, and age dropping, it will make for an even more interesting July as volume tends to drop after a strong June.
