Victims' family seeks truck believed to have been involved in fatal crash

The Minnesota State Police has just released a pair of videos in hope that the public might help identify a tractor-trailer believed to have left the scene of a fatal accident last summer.

Teenagers Zachary and Connor Kvalvog were killed in the June 23 crash on Interstate 94, near mile marker 68 in central Minnesota. The police report says the brothers, who were heading to a basketball tournament, crashed in their family's truck when a Kenworth pulling a while van trailer veered into their lane as they tried to pass on the left.

However, despite a $50,000 reward and widespread pleas for assistance in locating the rig, the family had almost given hope when experts began to analyze police dash cam footage taken from a responding trooper who approached the scene from the oncoming direction—meaning the patrol car likely passed the truck and captured a picture.

The analysis then prompted a review of the video footage from a nearby weigh station, from which still images have been released and circulated.

Father Ray Kvalvog told the Grand Forks Herald that “a picture is worth 1,000 words” and said he will update the billboards that he put up at the crash site with the new picture.

The Kvalvogs are still offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the semi driver. The money would even go to the driver if the driver came forward, according to the news report.

"I still believe it's all an accident. I don't believe people try to run somebody off the road," Kvalvog said.

He said it was possible that the driver did not even realize at the time that a crash occurred. But "now, I'm convinced that this individual knows what happened and who they are," he told the Herald.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call patrol Sgt. Rod Eischens at (218) 846-8244 or email [email protected].
