GPS Wireless Tracker allows users to add location and tracking services to handheld Palm PDAs or J2ME “smart phones.” Versions for handheld devices and phones using the wireless Windows CE/Pocket PC operation system will be available later this year from developer Portable Internet.
The GPS-based add-on unit can store location information when it is out of wireless coverage, forwarding data when coverage is re-established. Location reports can be sent as frequently as every second depending on fleet needs, according to the developer. Fleets access tracking data through an Internet connection to a hosted web-based service. Software versions for larger fleets are also available.
Costs for the handheld GPS unit start at under $200, and monthly service charges begin at $30/mo., depending on message frequency and time commitments, says Portable Internet.
