The Washington D.C.-based American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has published a new report intended to show how the trucking industry, the industrial sector and buildings could contribute to reducing the nation’s oil consumption.

In their report, “Reducing Oil Use Through Energy Efficiency: Opportunities Beyond Cars and Light Trucks,” the council identified heavy-duty trucks as representing the largest area of opportunity, noting that trucking “could yield savings of up to two-thirds of a million barrels per day by 2020 through the application of existing conventional technologies.”

Specifically, ACEEE is recommending that the federal government adopt several new energy policies, including establishing miles-per-gallon standards for tractor-trailers and for trucks in the 8,500-lb. to 10,000-lb.weight range. The report also recommends federal funding for truck idle reduction technologies.
