Qualcomm has announced three new security features— driver authentication, wireless panic button and tamper detection— for its OmniTRACS mobile-communications system. “Driver and load safety and security have become key concerns for trucking companies,” noted Chris Wolfe, president of Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions.
The driver-authentication feature verifies driver identification and authorization to operate a vehicle through a unique ID and password with “configurable” alerts. The wireless panic button extends the capability of the in-dash panic button through an inexpensive wireless transmitter drivers can use while out of the truck to signal help. The tamper-detection feature alerts the driver or management if any attempt is made to disable the OmniTRACS unit.
According to Qualcomm, all three security features work within the framework of the existing OmniTRACS system.
