Bonn, Germany-based Deutsche Post World Net is launching a new research and development initiative to be carried out by its express carrier subsidiary DHL via its new DHL Innovation Center.

The center, also based in Bonn, will support the development of cutting-edge innovations in the field of global logistics, including mail and express segments and should be completed by this fall, said Frank Appel, the board member responsible for Deutsche Post’s Global Business Services.

He said that specialists from IBM, Intel, Philips and SAP together with DHL experts will research innovations covering the entire logistics chain on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, geo-data technology for optimizing travel routes and networks, as well as logistics-related GPS (Global Positioning System) applications.
