The District of Columbia government, along with federal agencies, is considering a three-tiered system of truck routes, designed to reduce traffic congestion and increase security in the capital region.

All Class 3 trucks or larger – or trucks with a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 pounds – that travel through or make deliveries within the District would be affected by a panel’s recommendations that includes changes in loading zones, utility repairs in residential areas and tour bus operations.

The study is being coordinated by a Technical Advisory Group that includes representatives from the D.C. Department of Transportation, D.C. Office of Planning, Metropolitan Police Department, D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, U.S. Capitol Police, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, community groups and other stakeholders.

Recommendations are in a report produced by the D.C. Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge, Mass. Details are at www.ddot.dc.gov .
