CSX Intermodal (CSXI) plans to invest nearly $8 million to expand its Charlotte, NC, terminal, a key link in its eastern network.
Jim Hertwig, the company’s president said CSXI is working with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation (NCDOT) to plan the improvements, which include up to 10,000 ft. of extended tracks within the terminal, added loading and unloading equipment, expanded parking capacity for trailers, and improvements on the rail route that leads into Charlotte. The expansion will also include technology upgrades to allow truck drivers to enter and exit the facility more efficiently, Hertwig said.
When complete, the improvements will double the Charlotte terminal's capacity from 80,000 lifts to 160,000 annual lifts, with one “lift” representing the movement of a container or trailer on or off a train.
Hertwig noted that the Charlotte expansion is but one of several capital projects planned for CSXI's terminal network during the next five years, with other projects planned or underway at its facilities in Buffalo, NY, Tampa, FL, and Chicago, IL, along with a new facility in Chambersburg, PA, scheduled to open in September of this year.
