Union Pacific Railroad and Trinity Industries Inc announced July 18 that Union Pacific has increased its order of 64-foot refrigerated boxcars to 1,500 units from the 500 units previously ordered.

Built by Trinity Rail, these units will be used as part of Union Pacific’s Express Lane perishables service. This service, which is operated jointly with CSX Transportation, provides guaranteed service from the Pacific Northwest and California to a number of cities in the Midwest and on the East Coast. Originally begun in April 2000, this service has grown steadily with a number of new destinations added the past two years.

The new refrigerated units were developed jointly by Trinity Rail and Union Pacific. They hold up to 40% more product than a conventional refrigerated railcar and feature Carrier Ultima Premium refrigeration units.
