Millard Refrigerated Services, a refrigerated warehousing and distribution services company, received the Social Responsibility Award from the Subway restaurant chain and its franchisee-owned purchasing group, the Independent Purchasing Cooperative (IPC), at the Subway chain’s recent convention in Nashville TN. The Social Responsibility Award was presented in recognition of Millard’s sustainability, water reclamation, and waste reduction efforts at its Centralia WA facility. “We are very pleased to honor Millard Refrigerated Services with our Social Responsibility Award this year for their work in helping reduce the carbon footprint of Subway’s extended supply chain by optimizing product distribution to our stores,” said Will Costello, senior director of purchasing at IPC.

During the past year, Millard has launched several company-wide social responsibility and sustainability initiatives that support the goals of Subway and IPC. These include improving insulation at facilities, increasing efficiency of compressors, and working with partners to reduce empty miles —those miles where trucks are not carrying optimal loads. As many as one-quarter of all trucks on the highways are estimated to be empty, and the benefit of reducing that number is significant because the transport sector accounts for 60% of the nation’s oil consumption and a quarter of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. “Corporate social responsibility and sustainability are two critically important elements in the way we do business at Millard,” said Tim Smith, senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Millard, who led the company’s delegation to the awards ceremony. “Our goals are to recognize and take responsibility for the consequences of our actions, and then go further to bring about positive impacts. We are flattered to receive the Social Responsibility Award from IPC and are constantly reviewing our processes to make sure they meet with our customers’ high standards.” To learn more about Millard, access www.millardref.com.
