KES Science & Technology Inc announced that Greater Cleveland Food Bank has integrated the NASA-developed AiroCide food safety preventive controls air sanitation technology into its food distribution center in Cleveland OH. It joins more than 40 Feeding America Food Bank facilities that are now using this technology that is helping them expand perishable warehouse capacity by optimizing shelf life and reducing food waste.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in northeast Ohio, having provided nearly 39 million meals in 2013 to hungry people in six Northeast Ohio counties. This food bank serves more than 700 member agencies and operates a community food distribution center, providing food and other critical grocery products annually to more than 700 local food pantries, hot meal programs, shelters, mobile pantries, programs for the elderly, and other non-profit agencies. “I just wanted to let you know that your Airocide units are now installed and in operation, and we’re already noticing a difference,” said Michael P Miller, vice-president of operations at the food bank. “The most noticeable change was with tomatoes. We used to store tomatoes out in the warehouse, because a 37-degree cooler is too cold. If we were to hold tomatoes as long as two weeks, they would liquefy. We just distributed a truckload of tomatoes, and with combination of storage at the proper temperature along with Airocide units, the tomatoes we distributed at the end of two weeks’ time looked as good as those we distributed immediately upon receipt.” The AiroCide Food Safety Preventive Controls Photo Catalytic Oxidation (PCO) system destroys airborne mold, food allergens, bacteria, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ethylene gas. It also reduces unpleasant odors, helping to maximize shelf life and maintain product integrity. AiroCide is manufactured and distributed by Atlanta GA-based KES Science and Technology Inc.
